Kitimat, Terrace, Prince Rupert, the Nass Valley, Smithers, Hazelton, and many of the other small communities up this way are full of amazing hiking opportunities. Both low lying flat hiking trails and full mountain climbs can be found. We've mostly hiked in Kitimat, but one mountain we hope to achieve this summer is Mount Elizabeth. Here's a good description of the hike and how to get there. It's said to be pretty formidable and usually only accessible in August due to the snow it maintains almost year round. In the meantime we've been hiking a lot of valley, lower mountain, and coastal trails.
For anyone planning on checking out the 'northern' coastal mountains I strongly recommend looking into getting this book. It's a hard one to find online, but here is a great description of what this book will do for your hiking experience. If you can't find a copy at your local bookstore or online, there is a small bookstore in Terrace where you can pick up a copy before setting out some key hikes in the area.
